Tabcorp
take bets on which two teams in the final eight will
play off for the Grand Final. At one stage many years
ago now they were accepting bets on combinations that
were mathematically impossible. (Certain teams on
the same side of the draw cannot meet in the Grand
Final because they would have to meet each other in
an elimination match before they could get to that
stage.)
The practice was stopped after it was pointed out
to them by our own Professor Stephen Clarke and a
small article about the practice appeared in the Age
newspaper. Amusingly, the odds offered on the impossible
combinations were actually tighter than those offered
on some other combinations!
